Emeritus Prof. J. Bayo Adekanye, B.Sc. (Pol. Sc.) Honours (Ibadan), M.A., PhD (Brandeis).
A well established and respected Nigerian scholar and Professor of Political Science, Professor Adekanye was for 30 years at the Department of Political Science, University of Ibadan where he held continuous teaching appointment combined with some administrative responsibilities before retiring in 2006. Other institutions at which he has also held teaching and/or research positions include Ife, Harvard, Lancaster, Dalhousie, the International Peace Research Institute, Oslo (PRIO), Kogi State University, Anyigba and most recently Babcock University, Ilisan-Remo, Nigeria. He served as Coordinator of the Policy Analysis and Strategic Planning Unit (PASPU) as well as Peace and Security Analyst at the ECOWAS Headquarters, Abuja, from April 2006 to March 2007; was Founder and Foundation Director of Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies (CEPACS), and of the Centre's Masters in Humanitarian and Refugee Studies (MHRS) Professional Degree Programme, University of Ibadan, 2001-4; Initiator of the Masters in Strategic Studies (MSS) Programme established at the University of Ibadan's Department of Political Science in 1994, and since run jointly with the National Defence College (NDC), Abuja. A Recipient of numerous prizes, awards, and fellowships, Professor Adekanye was in 2006 conferred with the Fellowship of the Social Science Academy of Nigeria (FSSAN), the highest academic honour in Nigeria that a social scientist can possibly receive from professional colleagues and peers nationally. Only two years ago (2014), Adekanye was appointed to the distinguished rank of Emeritus Professor of Political Science at Nigeria’s Premier University and his alma meta, the University of Ibadan. He was Member of the Geneva-based United Nations Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances (WGEID), Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, June 2000 - August 2008, Deputy Chairman of the Group from May 2004 - May 2006, and Rapporteur & Leader of the Group's Mission to Columbia, July 5 -13, 2005; He has authored many books including the; Nigeria in Search of a Stable Civil-Military System (Aldershot, England, Gower, & Boulder, CO, USA, Westview), Military Occupation and Social Stratification (Ibadan, Vantage Publishers, for University of Ibadan, 1993), Retired Military as Emergent Power Factor in Nigeria (Ibadan, Heinemann, 1999; reprinted, 2006), (ed.) Managing Problems of Internal Displacement, Internally Displaced Persons and Refugees (Ibadan, CEPACS, 2004), Reforming the Character of Civil-Military Relations for Democratic Consolidation in Nigeria after 1999 (Lagos, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Lagos, 2005), Linking Conflict Diagnosis, Conflict Prevention, and Conflict Management in Contemporary Africa: Selected Essays (Lagos, Ababa Press, and Ibadan, CEGGAD, 2007), and Military Organization in Multi-Ethnically Segmented Societies: A Comparative Study (Ibadan, Abaeba Press & CEGGAD, 2008). He also has other numerous scholarly publications to his credit including journal articles, chapters in books, monographs and technical reports. Professor Bayo Adekanye writes and specializes in the fields of civil-military relations, military-ethnic studies, defence and development trade-offs, politics of debt and adjustment, strategies for conflict resolution and management, conflict prevention and early warning, conflict analysis and peacemaking, post-conflict military re-organization, ethno-regional dimensions to disarmament, demobilization and reintegration issues, transitional justice and reconciliation, regional security and humanitarian intervention, enforced or involuntary disappearances, internal displacement and refugee flows, post-conflict peace building, the state and civil society interactions, democratization and governance, conditions for sustainable and democratic consolidation. Professor Adekanye is happily married to (Mrs.) Tomilayo Olufolake Adekanye, a Professor of Agricultural Economics. The marriage is blessed with three sons and a daughter. Emeritus Prof. Adekanye is the new Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council at Chrisland University, a position which he assumed with effect from May 28 2016
