Criminology and Security Studies Programme of Chrisland University, Abeokuta commenced in 2015. The Department is fully committed to developing students who are well rounded, intellectually sound, confident, and creative to actively contribute to the positive development of nation building here in Nigeria and worldwide. Specifically, our training at this level will equip our students with all they need to pursue a career in social services and criminal justice as a post graduate degree in any of the sub specialties of Criminology and Security Studies. In addition, the focus of the programme is to develop keen analytical minds, facilitating skills, leadership skills and a strong sense of self, all of which will readily put our graduates a cut above the rest in any entry level career for university graduates in any national or international organization or system.

Programme Overview

The present set up allows students to relate with practitioners in the field through facility visits, field trips, course lectures/seminars, and attendance of organized professional conferences and workshops. Issues of professional and moral excellence, that are a hallmark of the university, are emphasized throughout the training programme.

The courses described have been carefully developed to meet National Universities Commission (NUC) benchmark minimum academic standard for the degree as well as prepare students to meet the challenges of professionalism in Nigeria. Hence, emphasis has been placed on proficiency in the course content, significance to the Nigerian experience, leadership and community development skills as well as facilitating skills. It is our intention to build well grounded, bold and confident graduates that will be able to make positive contributions to their immediate community and society at large.

Admission Requirements

Admission into the Bsc. Criminology and Security Studies programme in Chrisland University is by two modes; the UTME and Direct Entry. The requirements for each is as stated below:

1. UTME Admission: Candidates for admission into the four year degree programme in Banking and Finance should possess a Senior Secondary School Certificates of Education, National Examination Council or their equivalent with at least five credit passes including Mathematics, English Language and Economics at not more than two sittings.

2. Direct Entry: Candidates for Direct Entry admission shall possess five credit passes in the following;
(a) Senior Secondary School Certificates, General Certificate of Education, National Examination Council or their equivalent including English Language and Mathematics of which at least two shall be at the Advanced level or four credit passes of which at least three shall be at the Advanced level provided that such passes are not counted at both level of the examinations.
(b) OND in relevant discipline with at least upper credit grade in addition to the five credit passes as in 2(a) above.
(c) HND in relevant discipline with at least lower credit in addition to five credit passes in 2(a) above.

Lastly, the programme also encourages students to be job creators through the Entrepreneurial Skill Acquisition Scheme. The University’s general studies and other courses are expected to further equip the students for challenges during and after their degree programme. At graduation, students will receive the B.Sc. degree of Criminology and Security Studies, as well as a certification for Entrepreneurial Skill Acquisition.

Criminology is the study of crime and criminal behavior, informed by principles of sociology and other non-legal fields, including psychology, economics, statistics, and anthropology. It has 4 sub-categories shown below;

Biological

The biological school of criminology posits that genetic, neurological, and hormonal factors can predispose individuals to criminal behavior. The biological school of criminology is a theoretical perspective that emphasizes the role of biological and genetic factors in shaping criminal behavior

Penological

Penology is a subcategory of criminology, which is the study of crime, and sociology, which is the study of human interactions. A penologist is a person who studies penology and its various aspects. For example, a penologist may study the uses of prisons, the types of punishment, and the philosophies of punishment.

Psychological

Psychological criminology is regarded as the convergence of psychology and criminology, in which psychological criminology is concerned with the use of psychological knowledge to explain or describe, with the attempt to change, criminal behavior.

Sociological

The sociology of crime (criminology) is the study of the making, breaking, and enforcing of criminal laws. Its aim is to understand empirically and to develop and test theories explaining criminal behavior, the formation and enforcement of laws, and the operation of criminal justice system.
